Through out his novel, Orwell commitd a number of rhetorical techniques to portray a dysantopia at wide-cut swing. The passage of Winston in jail is no different. Through the use of concrete details, hysterical dialogue, and insightful character revelations, Orwell creates the depressing banknote that is evident in Winston’s mind.
IN this section alone, Orwell establishes the characters of three main characters that each help to create a no-count tone. At the beginning of this passage, Winston’s neighbor curates is brought in on the account of legal opinion crime; he was caught and reported by his own young lady. “In fact I’m soaring of her. It shows I brought her up in the right spirit, any stylus,” even though he was now in jail, and was more then potential going to be tortured for his negative thoughts about massive brother, in his sleep none the less, he button up honors the regimen. Parsons missy turned him into the law and forced him into the worst possible situation, withal he was too brainwashed to realize that. Parson still believed the government knew best, and he was proud that he had raised his daughter the ‘right’ way.
His admission of nothing being mad or even vengeful towards his daughter, but ‘dolefu[lly] [proud]” shows how there is absolutely no hope for Winston, or any other free intellect for that matter. Winston has no hope of finding any help in the jail because the only person, whom he is acquainted with, truly believes he is guilty for something that is not at al possible to control. Parson represents the entire population, minus Winston, and their hopeless devotion to the corrupt government; this symbolizes the hopelessness of Winston’s situation because if a person who was an wishful believer in the government was incarcerated, there was no way he was going to get away with the intense ‘thought crime’ he had committed.
