Ray proves to be a natural filmmaker, and his use of bootleg and white photography is often incredibly effective.
Set in a Bengali village, this uncomplicated story revolves around a family of four - mom Sarbojaya (Karuna Bannerjee), dad Harihar (Kanu Bannerjee), daughter Durga (Uma Das Gupta), and son Apu (Subir Bannerjee).
The father, Harihara, is a priest who is unable to make ends meet to proceed his family to thwarther. The mother, Sarbajaya, has the chief responsibility for raising her mischievous daughter Durga and affectionateness for her elderly aunt Indir, who is a distant relative and whose free-lance spirit sometimes irritates her. With the arrival of Apu in the family, scenes of happiness and sportswoman enrich their daily life.
Harihar is a struggling poet/playwright whos however making ends meet by working odd transmission lines, turn Sarbojaya has her hands full keeping their household running smoothly. Durga and Apu give the majority of their time playing, though Durgas weakness for little stealing causes problems among their neighbors.
Life, however, is a struggle, so Harihara has to find a new job and departs, leaving Sarbajaya alone to deal with the stress of this familys survival, Durgas illness and the turmoil of the monsoon.



The final disaster, Durgas death, causes the family to leave their village in search of a new life in Benares.
In spite of meagreness and death the film leaves one not depressed just now moved, filled with the beauty, and subtle radiance of life. The film suggests an intimate blood between loss and growth or destruction and creation.
