Tess in the World: An enquiry of Setting
Literary scholar JD Ballam wrote a figure is nothing without a move (Ballam). The telescope environment can be significant to any novel. It provides a backdrop to percentages that leads them on exciting adventures or establishes other values central to the story at hand. In Thomas Hardys novel, Tess of the dUrbervilles, the different settings and genius are essential to the overall story. Loyal to his realist background, Hardy portrays the characters and their setting in a true to life form. The story follows the character Tess by means of her troubles and strife in rural English society. Hardy, throughout the novel, vividly describes Tess world in the countryside of England. His descriptions are much more than simple narratives. The landscape and nature enhance the definition of Tess, confer Tess state of mind, and serve as symbols in the novel.
In Tess of the dUrbervilles, Tess travels through several environments each different and unique. Each setting, through Hardys diction, further characterizes Tess in respect to her background setting. The novel begins in the rural town of Marlott where Tess lives with her uneducated live farmer parents.
Tess is different from her family and the other country bumpkins. Hardys setting of a countryside distinguishes this difference. Her parents are portrayed almost as ignorant simpletons, where her father speaks in a country patois and often embarrasses Tess with his tomfoolery. There is a distinct difference mingled with Tess and her background. Her own mother states that Tess is queer (33). This variance of Tess to her surroundings provides the reader with a clearer picture of Tess as a whole. She differs from her simple countryside root which later intrigues Alec dUrbervilles and Angel Clare. Her husband, Angel, is first drawn to her because of her resplendence of nature.
