Passing is a deception that enables a person to gather in certain roles or identities from which he or she would be barred by prevailing social standards. The classic racial forward passerby in the United States has been the White Negro, these individuals physical show allows him or her to present themselves as white but whose somber lineage (typically of only a very partial stern lineage) makes him a according to dominant racial rules. A passer is distinguishable from the person who is merely mistakenthe person who, having been told that he is white, thinks of himself as white, and holds himself out to be white (though he and everyone else in his personal circle would deem him to be black were the facts of his personal line of credit known).
Passing for white offered not only opportunities, but alike the opportunities white people received. During slavery, it could mean freedom. There are numerous documented instances of fair-skinned slaves who posed as white to escape. In fresh times, it meant being able to vote in the South. It meant a hypothecate in the office rather than a job cleansing the office. It meant schools with the latest equipment and books, instead of dilapidated buildings and out-of-date texts. It often meant weaken housing. It meant being treated with respect, not disdain.




In Nella Larsens novel Passing, the spring concentrates on the issue of skin color and passing. Character Irene Redfield is a middle-class, light-skin African-American muliebrity who regrets passing but on occasion passes as white. Irenes life is going along as coarse when she runs into a childhood friend, Clare Kendry. Clare is also a light-skin African-American woman who passes for white.
